MeetupsDisclaimer
Meetups involve *drumroll* meeting real people. And doing real things. In the real world. I have limited control on what happens in the real world without me, and it would be unconscionable to hold me responsible for it. People should use their better judgment when interacting with others.
Meetups Manifesto
We share a commitment to software quality.
We’re not perfect, but in an industry obsessed with control and profit, we stand for user well-being, agency over software, and privacy. Handmade aims to build better software for humanity which is why we dig deeper into how computers actually work.
Wisdom is magnified by technical competence.
We need wisdom to distinguish software engineered for exploitation rather than genuine assistance. Furthermore, even when not exploitative it may have been constructed devoid of love, care, or consideration for those who will rely on it.
Meetups drive change.
To witness true change in our industry, we must consistently forge bonds among the programmers (and allies) who are deeply invested. Handmade Meetups are instrumental for this. While conferences carry weight, they can’t stand alone.
In the words of Gil Scott-Heron, “The revolution will not be televised.”

We’re going outdoors!
- This month we’re bouldering at the climbing walls in Marymoor Park. Saturday, June 8th, at 2:00 PM. Here’s a map link to the exact location.
- Climbing shoes, chalk bag, water bottle, and sunscreen recommended. Parking at Marymoor is $1 per day.
- There’s also a playground for small kids and picnic tables right next to the climbing area. Feel free to bring friends and family!
If it looks like rain I’ll send a follow-up email and we’ll just go to Edgeworks as usual.

Detroit, Meet Handmade!
@ The Congregation Coffee Shop
9321 Rosa Parks Blvd Detroit
– Via Google Maps
The Handmade Community was built on the shocking idea that developers aught to know what their code is doing.
It all started with Handmade Hero, but has led to some great talks and some great projects.
Handmade Detroit is about helping each other put those ideas to use, while building a network of like minded developers, so we can re-normalize how software is made.

It was wonderful to meet up with like-minded folks at the first Handmade DC Meetup in February! Among other topics, we discussed PS1 development, language and compiler development for a declarative JSON-like language, and AI GPU programming using Zig.
When?
Saturday, 2 March 2024, 1pm to 3pm
Where?
George Washington University Student Center 800 21st St NW, Washington, DC 20052. Entrance floor.
The University Student Center has a garage for visitor parking.
We will meet in the food court area. If you see a Panera cafe, you’re in the right place! We will have a sign at our table so you can identify us.
What?
Bring a project, a topic to present or discuss, an idea for an activity, or just a curious mind. If you are not sure that you have something to contribute, or fear that you are not ready, please know that the main priority is to provide a safe and supportive space to share the things we are passionate about and hone our craft.
Come join us to make some friends, learn something new, and build better software!

Hello,
I am keeping the every other week cadence going and doing another co-working session tomorrow. Same time and place. 2:30pm at the cafe in Third Place Books Ravenna. I will plan to grab the large table to the left of the ordering counter again. Just a heads up that there aren’t any outlets on hand over there so charge your laptops beforehand if you can.
The flow of working from 2:30 – 5 and then moving down to the pub for a hang and conversation has been great so let’s keep it going!
Cheers,
-Phil, Technical Producer

Handmade folks,
- Enter Distant Worlds coffeehouse, Seattle’s gathering grounds for geeks!
- The owner is fond of the Handmade community and generously provides enough space for all of us
- Showcase your personal project to receive friendly feedback, or bring a programming topic for discussion with the group. (You may also simply attend to enjoy our company)
- We typically hang out for 2 hours, with optional dinner and more fun afterwards~
